Empowering women in prison through skills based training
Status: On Going
With the aim of serving people who have experienced several forms of violence and bringing the vulnerable back into the mainstream society, OVN began working with women in prison in the year 2011. The NGO conducts various training and support services for the inmates in the prison of Kaski district. These includes health services and medical checkups, heath awareness sessions, counseling as well as support for reintegration, vocational training and promotion of income generation activities.
The inmates, particularly the women are given training in dress designing, weaving and other handicraft as per the interest of the inmates. The women are helped trough one to one counseling support to overcome their pains and sorrows, anger, desperation, struggle and disappointments. Counseling helps them to begin a new life, to be reconciled with one self, family and community. Besides skills training and counseling, family visits are organized when needed.
Further more, preventive and curative health care is given to both male and female prisoners including awareness session on health and hygiene. From early 2016 and in collaboration with Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, OVN provides medical services to them. On an average, 200 inmates are served monthly.
